It was the Technology Team's Christmas lunch in the Oaks Bar in Neutral Bay on Friday so I went to that and quickly stuffed as much food and beer into me as possible before getting a taxi to the airport. Was due to meet with Dave Wood in the Gold Coast and go camping on Moreton Island. Problem was that there was some "incident" on the main route to the airport through the city and that, added to the huge amount of holiday traffic, meant the 25 minute drive took an hour and 15 minutes. I missed the flight by a country mile.
After sitting feeling sorry for myself for a while I headed back to Bondi Junction and organised a flight the next morning to Brisbane. Dave agreed to pick me up the next morning from the ferry to the island. The flight was at 6:30am and I'm indebted to our Dave for giving me an alarm call at 4:00am otherwise I'd never have got up.
So after a bus, train, flight, taxi and finally ferry I arrived on the island at around 10:00am and we headed to the Blue Lagoon. Moreton is a close second to Fraser Island for scenery, wildlife and off-road driving so it's impossible to have a bad time there. Our camping crew were myself, Dave, his mate Gert and Gert's flatmate Meg.
Lay about drinking and eating on Saturday (Gert is an excellent cook) and then got up early on Sunday to do some touring round. Went to the north of the island and also scaled Mt Tempest, which at 280m is the highest sand blow in the world apparently. Fairly got the blood pumping that's for sure. We then went snorkeling later in the afternoon. There are a load of wrecked ships near where the ferry lands that were purposely put there to create an artificial reef so there are tons of fish swimming around. Got back to Dave's place in Brisbane for about 7:00pm and then went out for a few beers and to watch Utd beat Liverpool. What a great weekend.

There are more photos here. Planning my route back to Sydney now, which will definitely include Byron Bay and maybe a few other places along the way.
