Take my word for it that the centre of Autralia is a fairly hot place. And it has it's fair share of the most annoying flies ever. That being said it was spectacular and well worth the visit.
I arrived at Ayers Rock airport on Wednesday morning and had to wait for about 3 hours for the tour bus to pick me up. Everyone else on the tour had got on at Alice Springs and driven from there, which took them about 5 hours. So I hung around the resort near the airport and got picked up around lunch-time.
First port of call was Kata Tjuta (or the Olga's as they used to be known). I will put some photos on here eventually but I keep forgetting my camera. From there we went to see sunset at Uluru with some champagne and snacks. All very civilised. Then back to camp for food, more beer and rest. I was knackered as I'd been up late on Tuesday night and had an early start on Wednesday. So as soon as I climbed into my swag bag to sleep under the stars I was asleep. There were 3 Cork lads on the tour and we'd all bunked down in the same area but when I woke up the next morning (at 4:00am) there was a massive space all around my bed. Seems I was snorning a tad loudly and kept loads of the 18 other people awake all night. Wasn't too popular at breakfast.
Second day was spent walking round Uluru itself and it really is quite amazing. We weren't allowed to climb the rock because of high winds. They encourage people not to climb because of it's sacred place in Aboriginal culture so the fact it was closed removed any moral dilemma but it did look pretty appealing. After Uluru we drove the 300km to the next campsite in preparation for Kings Canyon on the last day. I even managed to play the digeridoo properly and was the only person in the group to do so. No snoring this time but I was savaged by a load of mosquitoes along with just about everyone else.
After another 4:00am start the Canyon was the most impressive part of the tour and rounded things off nicely. Got to Alice Springs then for a farewell dinner with the group and flew back to Sydney the next day.
Met Dave Wood pretty much straight away on Saturday evening and we were going to go to the Comedy Club but it was sold out. Next best thing? Pub crawl that ended up in Kings Cross. Also went out on Sunday to meet Ros and Mike in Bondi Junction. Now here we are on Monday and I've still no word on a visa and nowt to do. Thinking of going to Byron Bay for a long weekend but have to assess the financial implications. Was going to go Airlie Beach and meet Caroline for a tour of the Whitsundays but it's too expensive at this point.
