Australia Day Weekend

It was Australia Day on Friday so had the day off and a long weekend to enjoy. Went to a barbeque at the house of a girl who has recently left work. The house was just down the road from the Astor Cinema, which I've mentioned before, in St Kilda. Tried to make an effort and get some decent booze so arrived with a bottle of Appleton's Rum and none of the philistines had even heard of it. Drank it myself to prove a point.

Met an Irish lad who's been here for about 8 years and was waxing lyrical about the merits of Australia over anywhere else in the world. I'm not wholly convinced yet but we'll see. Another Aussie lad was trying to get me to play cricket with one of the local teams. He's clearly not seen me play cricket. Apart from that, the game of Jenga made an appearance later on. Neil, the Irish lad, has invited me to a party in a couple of weeks and has assured me there will be no Jenga being played at his house.

Sunday was the Big Day Out at Princes Park in Melbourne. It's a one day festival that tours the country with a load of different stages. I'd no intention of going but was one of a select number of people at work who were given a free VIP ticket. This was for services to the Promotions department so the moral of the story is that it pays to be helpful. Unfortunately, the VIP element contained no free booze or food but the toilet queues were much shorter and in better condition. Plus, I don't know enough C-list Aussie celebs to tell you if I saw any of them. Trying to meet up with people was the usual nightmare of failed text messages and no network coverage so that was just the same as the UK. The music was great though and saw Dan Kelly and the Alpha Males; Shooting at Unarmed Men; Kasabian; The Killers; Lupe Fiasco; The Presets and a little of Muse. Needless to say, sunburnt to feck but a good weekend nonetheless. Picture of the BDO below, with the 2 main stages to the right.
